Connectors: returning female digital creative entrepreneurs in China

In recent years China has developed the reputation of a technological (digital) superpower (Lee 2018). Many new articles and books have discussed the key role played by returning entrepreneurs, although almost all of these examples are male and almost all are in the internet technology sector. This paper focuses on female persons who have studied abroad and who now contribute to China’s aspiration to combine creativity and digital technology. The entrepreneurs in this paper have established a reputation by doing something different or unique, or by blending elements of western-style management with Chinese traditional values and aesthetics. They have in the process become successful role models. It is hoped that their success will connect more creatives in China with the world, while also connecting rural parts of China with the imagined ‘creative China.’ Drawing on interviews with these entrepreneurs, the paper shows the nature of interaction between global creative culture and Chinese creative culture. By considering the role overseas experiences have played in informing their entrepreneurial practices, it is possible to identify some specific practices, including: entrepreneurial behaviour, technological refinement, and new forms of creative expression. In addition, the entrepreneurs illustrate a cosmopolitan subjectivity in their practices by paying attention to both local and international subjects. In contrast to the success stories of tech titans, their entrepreneurship indicates a type of rising grassroots digital and cultural power, that is celebrated by the government in its slogan ‘mass entrepreneurship, mass innovation’.

Qing WANG is a Ph.D. candidate at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. She is currently supervised by Professor Michael Keane, and her Ph.D. project is about female entrepreneurship in digital creative industries in China, which is jointly funded by Curtin University and Shenzhen University in China.
